There is no doubt that vitamin E is one of the most important antioxidants in your skin. It is necessary to replenish it daily, from the inside as well as from the outside.
In a study of twenty women between the ages of 42 and 64, over half showed a remarkable decrease in the depth and roughness of the wrinkles on their eyelids, which had been treated with a vitamin E cream daily for four weeks. The conclusion to this and other studies is that use of the antioxidant vitamin E helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles in sensitive areas of the face.
Another important effect of vitamin E is that it protects against damage to the skin caused by UV-exposure, that is, the harmful ultraviolet rays in sunlight. A dose of UV light equal to about ten minutes of exposure to natural sunlight, there is a 50 percent reduction in the concentration of vitamin E in the skin.
In one study, mice that had been treated with vitamin E cream were exposed to UV radiation similar to sunlight. When examined, there was a dramatic decrease in the telltale signs of oxidative damage.
Because vitamin E is used up rapidly, it is important to replenish the skin’s reserve of this powerful antioxidant daily, at least once a day before the skin is exposed to sunlight. Twice a day is even better to gain the full effect of the antioxidant defence provided by vitamin E, especially when combined with vitamin C and pycnogenol.
