Antioxidant supplements - convenient life-enhancers
Antioxidants are present in their hundreds in many foodstuffs, especially vegetables and fruit. Some are only found in a small number of foods, whereas others are manufactured in the body. It is possible, through a well thought out and balanced diet, to get all the antioxidants you need through what you eat. In fact, that would probably be the ideal solution, except:
Some antioxidants are not present in food in sufficient concentrations to provide you with the optimal amount. For example, in order to get the ideal amount of vitamin E, you would have to eat 125 tablespoons of peanut oil or 100 pounds of liver. Clearly, that is unrealistic.
We all like different things. For example, if you don’t like soy products like tofu, you will not be able to secure a sufficient intake of the potent antioxidant genistein through your diet alone, since it is only present in soy products. Do you love broccoli? How about spinach? Most people don’t count green and leafy vegetables among their favorites, yet these contain high concentrations of strong antioxidants and are absolutely necessary if you want to get your antioxidants through your food alone.
Are you really going to eat a balanced diet, mostly consisting of antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, every day? For the vast majority of us, the honest answer is no. Most of us lead hectic and busy lives: we don’t always have the time or the inclination to compose and prepare healthy meals every day.
Invariably, the antioxidants that are manufactured by the body itself are produced in smaller and smaller quantities as we age. Consequently, our need for antioxidants increases with time. Meeting this demand with the diet alone would be impractical and close to impossible.
We can’t live without food, and supplements will not have full, or in some cases any, effect without food to work with. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants is essential, but getting all antioxidants, or even just acceptable quantities of the most important ones, from your diet alone is probably unrealistic.
Supplements are widely available and can provide you with all the antioxidants you need in sufficient daily amounts. In fact, if you don’t supplement your diet, you can’t realistically expect to gain the full effect of antioxidants. Most of us want to get more antioxidants into our system than we would normally get without changing our diet radically. Supplementation is the key.
