Not converted into vitamin A, lutein is an impressive antioxidant which is especially good for protecting the eyes. Free radicals caused by ultraviolet rays and macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness in people over sixty-five, are cleared away by lutein.
Green vegetables such as spinach and collard greens have lutein in abundance. Those who are not enthusiastic about those vegetables should consider taking lutein as a supplement.
Pregnant women should consult their doctor before taking lutein.
