Collagen, the protein for smooth and beautiful skin

Most of us probably know collagen from the celebrity columns and magazines, as many celebrities are said to have had collagen injections to improve their looks. Indeed, collagen is the protein that makes your skin firm and fills it out, so to speak. Among other important functions, collagen forms the connective tissue that supports the outer layer of skin and makes it taut and youthful.

Instead of having it injected, it is much better to let the body manufacture its own supply of collagen. That is what it normally does anyway, but as we age, production of collagen decreases. The smooth, taut skin of youth is replaced with sagging, wrinkled skin that shows signs of skin aging.

Until recently, it was thought that the slowdown in collagen production was an inevitable part of aging, but recent research shows that this is not the case. Maintaining the antioxidant advantage helps prevent and may even reverse some of the signs of skin aging. Many studies have shown that application of vitamin C creams and lotions can stimulate the production of collagen and make skin look younger and fresher. In other words, vitamin C will enhance the production of collagen synthesis. To improve this effect, use vitamin C as a supplement to strengthen the production of collagen further. This is another reason why it is a good idea to use vitamin C both as a cream and as a supplement.

One of the symptoms of scurvy, the disease which is a direct result of vitamin C deficiency, is loose skin that hangs flaccidly off the body. Clearly, vitamin C is important to skin tone and skin health. Skin cells treated with vitamin C actually become thicker, a sign of collagen regeneration.

As we note frequently on Antioxi.net, the antioxidants work even better when they work together, since they improve and supplement each other’s beneficial effects. Combining vitamin C with vitamin E and pycnogenol will make the effects of vitamin C on collagen production even stronger.
