One of the more famous antioxidants, as with alpha-carotene, beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A only as the body needs it, a process which leaves the remainder to keep acting as a powerful antioxidant. Because beta-carotene prevents the formation of free radicals, it is a powerful cancer preventive.
Numerous studies show that beta-carotene helps strengthen the immune system, prevent artherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. It will also protect against cataracts.
Brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as apricots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, carrots, peaches, spinach, broccoli, pumpkin, and mangoes are rich in beta-carotenes.
As a supplement, beta-carotene is sold separately, but is also included in mixed carotenoid formulas as well as most multivitamins and antioxidant supplements.
Note: People with hypothyroidism should probably avoid these supplements, as their bodies sometimes cannot convert alpha- and beta-carotenoids into vitamin A.
