The body converts alpha-carotene into vitamin A as it needs it. Alpha-carotene is very powerful when it comes to protecting the tissue of skin, eyes, liver, and the lungs against cell damage from free radicals, and studies show that alpha-carotene might be as much as ten times as powerful in these areas as beta-carotene.
Alpha-carotene is found in cooked carrots and also in pumpkins, but for added protection, you should also consider taking carotenoids as supplements. As a supplement, alpha-carotene is sold alone or in mixed antioxidant and carotenoid formulas.
Note: people with hypothyroidism should probably avoid these supplements, as their bodies sometimes cannot convert alpha- and beta-carotenoids into vitamin A.
